BEIJING (Reuters) - China will not allow chaos and war to break out on the Korean peninsula, which would be to no one's advantage, Chinese President Xi Jinping told a group of Asian foreign ministers on Thursday.[CN]

North Korea's drive to develop a nuclear weapons capability, in defiance of U.N. resolutions, has angered China and raised tension in the region.[CN]

"As a close neighbor of the peninsula, we will absolutely not permit war or chaos on the peninsula. This situation would not benefit anyone," Xi said in a speech to a Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.[CN]

ruling party congress in Pyongyang, and follows the isolated state's fourth nuclear test in January.[CN]

North Korea is expected to conduct another nuclear test before the rare congress, set to begin on May 6, at which young leader Kim Jong Un is expected to try to cement his leadership.

China is North Korea's sole major ally but it disapproves of its development of nuclear weapons and backed harsh new U.N. sanctions imposed against North Korea last month.

China has long called for the Korean peninsula to be free of nuclear weapons.

Nearly 30,000 U.S. troops are based in South Korea and the two Koreas are still technically at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice, not a treaty.

Xi also told the meeting China would safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea, while at the same time maintaining its sovereignty and rights there.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, believed to rich in oil and gas deposits. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also claim parts of the waters, through which about $5 trillion in trade is shipped every year.

China has rattled nerves with its military and construction activities on tiny islands in the disputed waters, including building runways, though it says most of it is for civilian purposes.

Chinese officials say the United States is pushing militarization and endangering stability with "freedom of navigation" operations by its military in the South and East China seas.

The U.S. operations were "extremely dangerous" political and military provocations that could lead to maritime mishaps, said Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian.

"Freedom of navigation has become an excuse for the United States to meddle in South China Sea disputes," Wu told a regular news briefing.

The United States calls its patrols an effort to demonstrate that the international community does not accept restrictions set up by some countries in international waters.

The 26-member conference on confidence building measures in Asia includes Russia and many central Asian and Middle Eastern nations. The United States and Japan are among eight observers.

This ought to be the basis for the issue being resolved. A Korean war would help no one, not NK, SK, Japan, the USA, Russia nor China. Yet lack of leadership might make it occur. I equally blame Bush and Obama by being so side tracked by Iraq, a war that should have never happened, we have left the Korea issue unsolved. the big powers should come together to de-arm the Korean Peninsula and have it be a neutral area for the next 50 years.[CN]

These are welcome words from President Xi although they are still incomplete and do not address China's primary problem. That is- because China feeds and heats the Kim regime and keeps it viable, if the DPRK initiates a threatened nuclear attack against the US or allies, does any thinking Chinese believe that they as enablers are immune from proportionate retaliation? Plans exist for this retaliation and in the event political pressure will require a proportionate response against the PRC. Nuclear weapons remain a great leveler for any perceived Chinese population advantage.[CN]

Gerard,

"China perpetuates the whole conflict by supporting North Korea and has done so for 50 years. If China really cared about peace, they would not support North Korea to begin with. This article is just American pandering. China has thousands of paid bloggers to push their imperialist, Tibet kidnapping, ASEAN sea territory stealing agenda.".[CN]

the Japan Foreign Ministry's annual budget for propagating its official views on history and territorial disputes was raised to 52 billion yen ($438 million) in 2015 from 2 billion yen in 2014 to "correct understanding by the international society," the Japan foreign ministry says.[CN]

What, does China expect the United States to just let North Korea get nuclear weapons and threaten to nuke the U.S. every week and do nothing because China says so. I just read a few days ago that trade between China and North Korea in March went up 25% while China tells the world that they will follow the sanctions against North Korea. All China does is trade with all countries that are under U.N. sanctions to boost their economy. The sad part for me anyway is that no matter who is the next U.S. President, they will not be strong enough when it comes to dealing with China and North Korea. I dont feel good whether its Hillary or Trump or Ted Cruz or Sanders or whoever.[CN]

Cruz is an idiot that can't please a woman in the sac so thinks no man shall be allowed to please their woman.

Sanders won't accept war as an answer for all things wrong but will get the economy booming once again, with a price. War will be threatened and Bernie will make the mistake of opting out too many times.[CN]

This is such rubbish reporting. North Korea exists because China supports them with free food and fuel. They have kept the brutal, gulag loving regime in power because China loves the Korean peninsula divided so that it will not be a competitor to China. China Doesn't want the prosperous freedom loving regime of South Korea to succeed. They want South Korea to spend huge amounts of money to defend itself from the communists in the north who murder and torture people for political reasons, fleeing the country or being Christian. China tacitly supports this. China has brought chaos, mayhem and imperialist destruction to Asia for over 50 years. They illegally occupied Tibet and have brutally oppressed that nation and jailed 1/6 of the population for political reasons. China has fought a border war with Russia and Vietnam, in which Vietnam defeated the Chinese at Cao Phong. Now China claims the entire sea between the Philippines and Vietnam, which has many islands owned by the nearby nations. China's imperialist greed must be stopped by ASEAN, Japan, America, the EU and the United Nations. China claims Japanese territory so it can distract its people from the fact that most water is polluted, cancer is rife and the air so poisonous millions die. People forgot China stole part--the Aksai China area, to build a military highway,of India's Kashmir state and to this day claims a huge piece of northeastern India's Arunachal Pradesh state and areas of the Himalayas. China supported the Taleban by building a cell phone network and to this day supports Kun Sa's Wa State Army, which exports most, along with Afghanistan, of the world's heroin, with a cell phone network and has destabilized Myanmar by supporting guerrillas with APCs. China has already stolen, according to General Keith Alexander, trillions of dollars of U.S. military and industrial secrets--the largest theft in world history. China supports Russia, who is stealing Ukrainian territory as we speak with Russian special forces who have merely abandoned their fatigues in Russia. Both China and Russia are a dangerous threat to world stability and peace. China executes and tortures people based on slander and does it one a whim or political motive. Human rights are virtually non existent in China.

China has lost control over North Korea for a long time, because the regime continue to develop nuclear & ballistic missile technology despite years of threat from their only ally (China). Right now, China's promise and threats are a bit hollow, and their credibility is next to zero.[CN]

Where is nK getting the resources in metal and other raw materials to build these rockets? Not to mention the engineering and technological expertise needed? nK has only 3 land borders, the DMZ and ROK to the south and China and Russia to the north and neither of the two latter can be trusted not to engage in subterfuge.[CN]

This world is getting smaller and smaller due to population growth and better ways of communication. In a few or several hundred years, all countries will be united somewhat like the states of the United States are united. After all, in the universe we're all traveling on the same spaceship, are we not? We have to learn how to live together or perish.[CN]

China puts up with North Korea carrying out weapons development and actively attacking south korea. This is all evidence of the Fact that China is not our ally and we should not be trading with China.

So when do they plan on actually doing anything to stop N.K.. As we are approaching the 5th or 6th attempt to launch a missile that will start a war, the situation becomes simpler, either China can take him out or we will.

It's one thing to be reckless with your military, which is bad enough but when you add the fact North Korea is accused of counterfeiting Chinese money, and A LOT of it then of course Xi Jinping will at least move "forces of stability" closer to North Korea. It's hard to believe leadership in North Korea would be stupid enough to anger China.

It would be most helpful if China would support a coup to remove the feral pygmy from power with someone more open to opening up. It could be a whole new market for them.

China will bide its time in dealing with North Korea because: Killing Un or fomenting a rebellion would result in North Koreans flooding into China to get food, etc., and the cost to rebuild the North would cost trillions. They would favor a unified Korea, so the U.S. would have no further reason to stage troops in their region.

I've read like a zillion articles about NK, Sk, China, the UN sanctions and all the test firing of rockets, but all I see is blah, blah, blah, blah and more blah .... do we really need to wait for Jaba Jung Un to fire a real nuke before this all has to end? I get the diplomatic thing, but before you know it we will be in reaction mode dealing with the fall out rather than be proactive and deal with the living...

You bring up a fair point! What we’ve been hoping for is the NK people to rise up and do something. I’d argue it is unique in human history that people have put up with this for so long and still so strongly support it. Problem is we’re not fighting NK, we’re fighting China and Russia. Even if we somehow magically knew that they wouldn’t support NK, what NK would do as troops come across the DMZ could be terrible. They’d most likely throw everything they’ve got at South Korea and Japan and could essentially wipe them off the map. We could be looking at 20+ million dead within 24 hours.

Wu's statement is a bunch of BS. He acts as though the US has only recently been sailing these waters, when in fact, the US has been sailing them regularly since WWII to keep the waters free for navigation. The Chinese need to remember who freed the South China Sea.....the U.S.A.
