Dear Oh Dear; How Very Sad indeed. The Soothsayers are Still Alive and Kicking ! ' What Will Be - Will Be ', and No-Matter what us mere mortals do, there may be Little Chance of Stopping the Outcome. There is Always a Possibility of a 'Chance' .Never-Give-Up!

My estimate was 100 years, but I'll concede. He knows better than me!

Somewhere between the two, I think.

Humans are an experiment of nature and once all the resources we have made ourselves dependent on for our survival have run out within the next thousand years even our 'intelligence' wont save us. Severely depleted, human numbers will drop to millions then thousands through war, famine and disease. A few might remain only to slowly revert to an animal like existence. Sure, why not pack some off now to another part of the galaxy. Why?

I will mind my own business. That's enough for me. And by that I will be alive for less than 1000 apparently

He is right...we have no proof to say civilisations like ours get past the point we are at right now..no visits from ET or distant signals from strange new worlds just empty space. Until we find other life like our own we will never know if life gets past the stage it is at her on earth right now.

If earth is a truly living entity, fork tongued people are the GM, carcinogenic cells that cannot exist without imparting industrialised death on all that it infects. They should kill themselves. But have you ever known a cancer cell to kill itself? What does it kill?

Mut have been an advertisement paid by Richard Branson. Why would a scientist mention only one of the many competitive players in the aerospace industry?

Well with a predicted 3 degrees rise in temperature in the next 100 years we are surely ****** (the difference between now and the ice age is only 4 degrees)

A certain leader started up a 1000-year dream in 1933. It lasted 12 years. Let's hope Prof Hawkins isn't so far off the mark, or that means the human race will close for business in 2028

yeah now we've wrecked our planet so time to move on and find another to destroy. And i it has any type of Intelligent who dares to object well we'll either kill or enslave them!

Maybe, but it assumes a kind of linear approach whereby civilization expands and expands until theres a tipping point and then it explodes.... Maybe a more realistic scenario would be a widespread pandemic, famin, war, natural event like a meteroite etc which culls the human species, gives the world a chance to heal and for a new civilization to rise up once again. A bit like the Romans vs. now albeit the global population is a lot hoghee than it was back then, so the 'event' would need to be big. I think SH misses the point by trying to advocate space trabel and he also underestimated the amount of damage the earth can take before it 'corrects' itself, IMO...

which implies hawking isn't worried about global warming which we are told will finish us off in a few decades. if hawking isn't worried about GW then that's good enough for me too

We will probably not survive 100 years, as we are on an extinct path with no viable direction except one. The purpose seems to be to create the Technological Singularity and then thinking machines will determine our future. Hope or peril statements are of little relevance as this cannot be controlled. The truth is once fully autonomous AI is a reality we will be in the position of the hypothetical Schrodinger's Cat. This must have been programmed into our evolutionary genetic path by something, otherwise why are we hurtling towards this scenario, without reasoning why. Go to Quantumanity and consider if anything is changeable.

To survive space trip humans need to make a robots to build and service huge space stations - Stephen Hawking doesn't like it, or genetically change yourself - many other people doesn't like it. Actually it is better both to increase survival rate.
