Was there a couple of years ago. It was built under an orthodox church. We had to go down a grotto and the supposed manger area was marbled, people kissing on it, it was disgusting. Then got told off for lingering too long which was less than 5 minutes. Was worth it though, at least I get to visit even though I'm not a religious person.Sojourner -
It is a beautiful place. I don't actually care too much if it is the actual birthplace of Christ or not - what it represents is beautiful. Built in the 6th century, and people have been travelling there and focusing their love and faith in that place for all that time. It's lovely.Candidly
The Bible does not explain why Joe had to stay in a barn when he would have had many relatives in Bethlehem that would have put him up for the night.WhYmanReply toCandidly
That's what it was really. The Greek word used in the New Testament does not refer to a commercial inn but instead to a family residence. These houses had a barn area inside, where the animals could be sheltered during the night. With a large number of family members there for the census the only place available would have been the area the animals slept.Dr.FyndallReply toCandidly
The 'inn' was a mistranslation from Greek. Joseph returned to Bethlehem for the Census, so he returned to his overcrowded family home. The animals were brought in for winter. There was no space in the living area so Mary, being pregnant & unmarried, had to deliver with the animalsStephen
I went there in December 1989 (not for religious reasons, but as part of a trip to Jerusalem) and was struck by how very small and underground it was, descending down a very tight stone staircase to a very small room, probably not able to hold more than half a dozen people at a time. The video here doesn't reflect that at all. And it looks to have been embellished with tapestries etc for the tourists. Shame really - it all left my wife and I feeling a little detached about the place.
