DURHAM, N.H. (AP) — The University of New Hampshire now acknowledges that spending $17,000 on a custom-made chef's table with LED lights for the campus dining hall was a mistake.[CN]

Initially, university officials thought the light-up table would allow the dining staff to interact with students and demonstrate healthy cooking techniques.[CN]

But word soon got out about the $17,570 price tag on the 16-seat table, which was installed several weeks ago. The school newspaper wrote about it, and other media outlets picked up on it.[CN]

The table costs nearly as much as in-state students pay annually for tuition and fees.[CN]

On Friday, UNH spokeswoman Erika Mantz told The Associated Press that having a chef's table was a good idea, but much less money should have been spent.[CN]

The university plans to keep the table.[CN]

Just feed the students instead of finding ways to waste their tuition money.[CN]

Since the UNH president makes at or close to $400,000 a year, these costs don't seem extravagant, just a drop in the bucket.[CN]

They can just raise the tuition, the government will continue pushing loans that can't be defaulted on to promote higher education. Money means nothing.[CN]

So, after careful consideration, it was a good idea, but it was dumb to pay over $17,000 for such a table, and we are going to keep it, so shut up![CN]

A good example of how purchasing departments of schools (K through college) are COMPLETELY divorced from what things should actually COST. They just close their eyes and click "order" on items, without even bothering to check and see if the same student desk they're ordering for $800 could be bought at Costco for $129. You want to feel disgusted? Look at what "school supply" catalogs charge for a damn plastic student desk chair![CN]

It's the same with state government as well. We're forced by contract to use one supplier for office supplies, so we get hit with things like a pack of 4 AA batteries for $4 that you can buy by the dozen for less on Amazon.[CN]

It's not just "government" -- this happens *whenever* there is a 3d-party payer. For example, Congress spends way more money than they have - Why? because it's the "taxpayers' money (or "country's") money, not their own. Why can universities spend so much on #$%$ like this? because it's not students' money directly (it's money the students borrowed). Same again with medical costs (it's not my money, it's my insurance company's money, so $800 a pill is actually POSSIBLE). Why Americans have not learned this lesson...?[CN]

UNH is only sorry about one thing..getting caught. Not to pick on UNH but nearly every college in the country spends money foolishly since they can do whatever they want and just keep raising tuition. Keep feeding the money pig...college tuition.[CN]
