The French were the problem in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. A brutal government who held those countries as colonies. China may have helped those small countries defend themselves (also against the US invasion) but China pretty much keeps it's nose out of other people's business.

can't you all see, China did all the spreading Communism to control or keep it's potential enemy in check in Asia region. China did a basic divide and conquer method. In the case of Vietnam and Korea, it was partial win for China communist but still benefited on the chaos on the region.
