An inside look at child marriage in Bangladesh
MANIKGANJ, BANGLADESH - AUGUST 19: 14 year old Shima Akhter walks through a field near her home August 19, 2015 in Manikganj, Bangladesh. Last year, when she was 13, Shima married an 18 year old man. In June of this year, Human Rights Watch released a damning report about child marriage in Bangladesh. The country has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world, with 29% of girls marrying before the age of 15, and 65% of girls marrying before they turn 18. The detrimental effects of early marriage on a girl cannot be overstated. Most young brides drop out of school. Pregnant girls from 15-20 are twice as likely to die in childbirth than those 20 or older, while girls under 15 are at five times the risk. Research cites spousal age difference as a significant risk factor for violence and sexual abuse. Child marriage is attributed to both cultural tradition and poverty. Parents believe that it 'protects' girls from sexual assault and harassment. Larger dowries are not required for young girls, and economically, women's earnings are insignificant as compared to men's. (Photo by Allison Joyce/Getty Images)
Getting married before the age of 18 is a common part of life for girls
living in Bangladesh. Currently, the country has one of the highest
rates of child marriage in the world.
An estimated 29 percent of girls will marry before the age of 15 and 65 percent before the age of 18, according to the Human Rights Watch.
While these unions are recognized as a part of Bangladeshi tradition,
they come with significant risks for the young brides, like dropping out
of school, death during childbirth and spousal abuse.

I think what is important here is that this practice has been a part of the culture for 1000's of years. We are looking at it from a Western perspective and we are passing judgement based on our own culture. Even in philosophical circles, it is difficult to pass moral judgement when one culture clashes with another. I believe that the Western influence will change this practice over time. More and more are speaking out against this. Many factors have to be overcome first, one is poverty and another is education.
That Country has always been that way. It's their culture. It's not right but, it's their culture.Their parents sell these girls. When they have children, they don't want girls, they want boys. I saw the whole story on PBS. Very strange customs and uncivilized but that's they it has always been. The Romans.. When their children were born and they didn't look quite right, they would take babies and thrown off of cliffs. They didn't want defective babies. Mainly Males who couldn't be turned into soldiers so, Marrying your daughters off at fifteen doesn't seem that bad. Most those people are poor and don't need another mouth to feed. One less child one less mouth to feed. Most of these girls get traded for cattle and goods. The cattle is worth more then the girl. The marriage here in America at one was 10 years old in the south. Families also traded their daughters off for money or cattle. This was Black and Whites alike. Boys were worth more because they could do heavy labor.
One can only hope that these backward countries will someday come into the 21st century and start treating women like human beings instead of possessions and baby machines.
This happens right here in the US. Have you seen some of the information on the polygamous cults? The Warren Jeffs cult was marrying off girls as young as 10 almost always to old men. What about groups like the Duggars who treat women like nothing but baby making machines?
Skip on over to your favorite upscale department store in the mall and look at how much of their high markup merchandise is from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, etc. While they claim to be all about womens rights, etc, they continue to flock to the poorest and most least paid garment workers in the world to get their wares.
We should move all of our factories out of Bangladesh and force the workers back into the home to have more children and a lot less money to feed them. That will make the men angrier at the women and maybe the husbands will cause their wives to die in a "kitchen fire" so the man can get a new wife, a common practice in the region for getting rid of unwanted women.
Child brides may be the single largest contributor to global overpopulation. A fifteen year old bride soon bears a daughter who can bear the next generation just a few short years later. Easy to double the population at that rate! It is in all our interests to stop this practice. Better for young women to stay in school, allow bones to develop fully before carrying a pregnancy, and enter into marriage with greater maturity that deserves respect from a husband, not child abuse. Please consider supporting the Malala Fund.
Its in our interest to sstop this? Obama loves these people. And your favorite mall clothing store gets all their merchandise from these people. America doesn't want to stop it, hell too many American companies are making money on it.
As the USA begins to accept homosexual relationships,it will be very difficult to convince them that they are the country that is backwards and archaic.
Bangladesh is a cesspool that could use a good scrubbing, along with the loss of 50% of it's population. They are eating and drinking and living in their own waste, there are so many of them. Forced birth control before ANY humanitarian aide. Zero population growth forever.
Just a legal question here. If a man from Bangledesh marries a 13 year old and then moves or jus travels to America or Europe, etc. can he bring his bride as his wife and have maritial relations with her.
As far as I am aware America has simular laws in place just we don't get down like that. In a lot of states the age of consent is 16 but with parental consent you can marry a 13 year old if you truely wish. So I'm sure travel and moving wouldnt be an issue besides all the personal attacks you would face in more developed countries where its frowned apon.
