Why invent, and pay for the design development, let someone else get the headaches. When your industrial spies can lift the design and you can just copy someone else¿s, hard work.Good to see that they copied the Japanese ShinMaywa US2, it sort reinforces how good the Japanese aircraft is for it to be copied.

I liked the news of the day relating that the Spruce Goose "lumbered" into the air.

Technically, this aircraft is not a flying boat, but an amphibian. As neither are built anymore (a pity) this is still the largest of its type built today.

The Dornier Do-X of 1929 was quite impressive, too.

'The H-4 Hercules, known as the Spruce Goose is regarded as by far the largest seaplane ever built although it only ever made one flight in 1947. Its wingspan is still longer than the AG600's'--- As stated by the DM. ----- . Spruce Goose, Wingspan: 98 m, Length: 67 m, Weight: 136,100 kg : AG600 : Wingspan 40m, maximum takeoff weight of 53.5 t (53,500 kg; 118,000 lb), lenght: 40m. So the Spruce Goose had a wing span 58m longer than the AG600, was 82,600 kgs heavier than the AG600 and was 27m lomger than the AG600. Charlie Moore, please explain your headline--- The aircraft, dubbed the AG600, is around the size of a Boeing 737 - far larger than any other amphibious plane, and ' by far the largest seaplane ever built'.

Where do you get your information? The Spruce Goose had a wingspan of 320 ft, nearly three times the size of a 737 and far from serving in WWII, only made one flight.

It says..."designed to carry troops", which it was.

The "Spruce Goose", a derisive nickname by the way, made only one flight and was not finished in time to be used in the war. If I remember correctly, it's one flight was very low altitude. Only the one PROTOTYPE was ever built.

By the time it got to the flight testing phase, the war was over and the plane wasn't needed. So it became nothing but a chapter in the history of aviation.

And even then, it was only meant to be a taxiing run, but Hughes decided on the spot to see what it could do. I think it was Hughes himself who decided not to take it further.
