Archaeologists Believe They’ve Found Captain Cook’s Ship Endeavour

Simon Lewis

Researchers in Rhode Island say they have probably found the wreck of the HMS Endeavour, the ship that British explorer Captain James Cook sailed on his expedition that reached Australia in 1770, previously unknown to Europeans.[CN]

The ship was renamed the Lord Sandwich and used as a troop transport during the American War of Independence before being scuttled in 1778 along with 12 other ships off the U.S. Atlantic coast.[CN]

In a statement on its website, the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) said it had now identified shipwreck sites in Newport Harbor that researchers believe account for all five ships that are known to have been sunk there, including the Endeavour.[CN]

“All of the 13 ships lost in Newport during the Revolution are important to American history, but it will be a national celebration in Australia when RIMAP identifies the Lord Sandwich ex Endeavour,” the statement said, ahead of a progress update on Wednesday in Providence, R.I.[CN]

Captain Cook, a great explorer, legendary in his mastery of sail, charting and mapping. And for you millennials, he began as a humble sailor hauling coal up and down the English Channel. Yeah, he also did grunt work. As a footnote a Captain Bligh sailed with him on his third voyage, another able leader of which today we find so few.[CN]

William Bligh was a mere Master during Cook's third voyage. He wasn't to see the rank of captain for another decade or so, after he commanded "Bounty" as a lieutenant.[CN]

That is awesome! And it is part of American history and lore. John Ledyard (also known as Ledyard the Traveler), was an American, an ancestor of mine, who sailed with Cook on the last Endeavour voyage. These ships are amazing vessels.[CN]

It must have been hard to find the ships, especially since they were in a harbor and everyone knew where they were for over 200 years. (:[CN]

@B777_9X unless the ships were thoroughly stripped before being scuttled there would be numerous items that would ID the ship. Add to this that the names of the 13 ships that were scuttled are known and the other recorded information about the ships and yes the odds that the remains can be identified.[CN]

Leonard throughout American History the Elite have voted in loopholes to exempt themselves from service. In fact many have made their fortunes profiteering from wars. While the "regular people" were drafted to serve the elite had a choice in many cases.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
SnowReply toSnow

John Boy 75% comes from the fact that 3 out of 4 expenditures issued by the Government pay for Subsidy and Entitlement laden programs. Go check out the GAO results for the Years 2102, 2013 and 2014 payments. You will note that these progreams fund welfare and food stamps as well as housing and insurance for Legal Citizens and Illegal Visitors.....duh!

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
JonathanReply toSnow

Of that 3/4, 35% goes to Social Security and another 23% goes to Medicare. Are you suggesting we do away with those programs? Welfare's 6% of the total budget. Stop misinforming.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
Steve MooreReply toSnow

Snow - you have no idea where I'm from or where I live, and therefore no idea where my ancestors are from, nor whether your ancestors owned the land where I live (even if you yell it in all uppercase letters). Regardless, it has little if anything to do with the matter at hand, and doesn't change your challenged spelling.

I'm not sure why - nor do I particularly care why - you're so obsessed with Elites and Masters and Slaves, but I'm confident help is available if you choose to seek it out.

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
SnowReply toSnow

Entitlements are not classified as Welfare only - You can quote the Hillary book all you want to but the cold hard facts of the entire fiasco of Elite government is that they control and make the law and we pay for it all.
