Then you have no idea what tropical climate is...

Grasshopper FarmerReply toBangalfoday
No one was talking about a tropical climate. Those are mostly found in the tropics either side of the equator. They referred to a sub-tropical climate, defined as somewhere where the average temperature remains above 10 C for seven months of the year or more and has little frost.

Unusual to have moors in the tropics.

Thats what I thought. They have conveniently missed the really bad winter around 8 years ago when we all got snowed in for amonth and the cold washed out Augusts of the past few years. However, it is warmer than most parts of the UK all year round, especially winter and I have no issue with people visiting us . Its beautiful countryside here and great beaches . Its a blessed county.

Love Cornwall, but had to laugh at this. Went a month ago, worst weather on record and 5 degrees colder than at home!

Sub tropical? Did they spend the day in the Eden project?

The Eden project has cost us all millions of pounds in subsidies and Tim Smit has been the one to gain most from it but all it does is preach global warming nonsense.

They have been growing those plants in Cornwall since long before I or my Dad were born. To present this as a global warming phenomenon is beyond ridiculous.

In the red corner, some anecdote about plants. In the blue corner, actual scientific data.

'On average, temperatures stay above 10C for over seven months of year' ...surely this criteria for being subtropical would cover most of southern England?
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
Grasshopper FarmerReply toVectis
No. The average includes the day time high and the night time low. Technically anywhere from 40 north or south to the Arctic and Antarctic circles are classed as being in the temperate zone. But places don't always follow the latitude. Mexico City is in the tropics but has a subtropical climate because of the altitude. I live in the subtropics at 35 north but the climate is classed as temperate continental, a few hundred miles to my east is classed as subtropical, humid.

It's all very well saying weakening pound, but you try booking a hotel in Cornwall for a week in August with the same facilities as those in Spain - and meaning a decent 4 star standard. The prices are extortionate more than flights, hotel, and food and this forces those who would love to stay in Cornwall to fly and get a cheaper holiday in Spain, Portugal etc..

And the Pound is still higher against the Euro than it was in 2008-2011 and 2013.

Going to Cornwall for the first time in September and taking our dog with us, my husband has always spoken highly of Cornwall so it'll be interesting to see. Good weather will be a bonus!

Enjoy! I took my dog with me when I went camping in Cornwall - lovely to see just how "dog friendly" everywhere is (apart from a few beaches that had summr restrictions) . Everywhere I went to eat had dog treats offered to Daisy and in one lovely place in Fowey the biscuits were served up on a little doggy plate! When I needed to pop into shops I was even allowed to take her in them (including a well known chain of chemists)! I certainly would not have been allowed to do at home! Many of the stunning gardens too allow dogs which is great. Have a great time - fingers crossed for good weather ! Cornwall is my dream destination when sun shines! ¿

Eeeughhhh! Awful but sadly true..... Daisy is quite traumatised (probably scarred for life actually) upon reading your comment (yes I've taught her to read ..... ) so we will just stick with Cornwall thanks ...... and risk being called emmetts.

Most people don't realize that most of Europe is on the same latitude as Canada. The UK and most of Europe would be colder than most of the inhabited parts of Canada if it were not for the Gulf Stream ocean current originating in America. Better hope that current never changes direction for good.

70% of Canadians live further south than anywhere on the British mainland. Toronto at 46 north is almost in the tropics compared to the Scottish highlands just 11 degrees south of the Arctic Circle.

As you are now exiting the EU may we introduce to you excellent whites from the Niagara region and full bodied robust reds from British Columbia, grown at 43 degrees north in Ontario and 49 degrees north in British Columbia. Latitude does have its advantages. Advertising? Maybe, but you are looking for trade aren't you?

This doesn't mean we have fantastic summers down here. It means we have milder winters, I've only counted a couple of light frosts in the last two winters. The sea keeps us warm, it also means it's usually pretty damp. But that's not to say on a nice day in summer this isn't the best place in the world.

Cornwall and Devon were always known as the English Rivera because of the mild climate.
