SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The American-led U.N. command on Saturday dismissed as unsubstantiated accusations from North Korea that U.S. troops at a border village tried to provoke its frontline troops with "disgusting acts."[CN]

A North Korean military statement Friday warned U.S. soldiers to stop what it called "hooliganism" at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom or they'll meet a "dog's death any time and any place."[CN]

It said U.S. troops pointed their fingers at North Korean soldiers and made strange noises and unspecified "disgusting" facial expressions. It also said that American troops encouraged South Korean soldiers to aim their guns at the North.[CN]

A statement from Christopher Bush, a spokesman for the U.N. command, said they looked into the allegations and determined they were unsubstantiated.[CN]

North Korea occasionally accuses South Korean and U.S. troops of trying to provoke its border troops and vice versa. After North Korea's first nuclear bomb test in 2006, the U.S. accused North Korean troops of spitting across the border's demarcation line, making throat-slashing hand gestures and flashing their middle fingers.

The latest North Korean accusation came a day after South Korean and U.S. officials said two suspected medium-range missile launches by North Korea ended in failure. In recent weeks, North Korea fired a barrage of missiles and artillery shells into the sea in an apparent response to annual South Korea-U.S. military drills that ended Saturday.

About 28,000 American troops are deployed in South Korea to deter potential aggression from North Korea, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War, which ended in an armistice and not a peace treaty.

Panmunjom, located inside the 4-kilometer- (2.5-mile-) wide Demilitarized Zone that bisects the Korean Peninsula, is where the 1953 armistice was signed. It remains one of the world's most dangerous flashpoints, but Panmunjom — jointly overseen by North Korea and the American-led U.N. Command — is also a popular tourist spot drawing visitors on both sides.

Visitors from the southern side are often told by tour guides to be extremely careful about what gestures they make so as not to antagonize the nearby North Korean soldiers.

In 1972 or 1973, I was on a temporary duty assignment (TDY) along the DMZ northeast of Seoul, Korea. I was Air Force, and the purpose of my trip was to do maintenance. An Army specialist took us to a wall of sandbags that was about 10 ft tall ant told us that beyond the wall was the no-man's-land of the DMZ. We were ordered not to look over the wall at N Korea... no exceptions! Then the specialist took a styrofoam mannequin head that was made up to look human, and put it on the end of a mop handle. He raised the head above the wall and turned it back and forth as though it were someone surveying the landscape. There was a resounding Whack, and the mannequin head disintegrated into styrofoam debris. A moment later we heard the gunshot. Talk about provocation. The North was trying to kill Americans whose only crime was to look into North Korea. While there, we were also shown an opening to a tunnel that was large enough for a convoy of light or medium tanks to pass through. The tunnel was packed with explosives as far as the DMZ and collapsed.[CN]

Your being thousands of miles away armed to attack if ordered and thinking it's your ordained right was provocation enough.[CN]

Hmmm.... LIES.[CN]

The DMZ is 2.5 miles across. For too far for accurate gunfire- and too long to hear a shot.[CN]

Second, all the tunnels have been for infantry ONLY. You can't deice tanks into them, and without ventilation, the crews will quickly die as the engines spew exhaust and suck up the oxygen[CN]

I'll say it again set up nice tables with great huge roasted turkeys and mammoth roasted pigs and such just where these NK soldiers can see them . Let the SK soldiers and the American one feast .Oh at least once a week should do it .[CN]

Because we are in a cease fire with the North - the war was never officially ended. Now, we have allies in SK and investment and citizens living and working in the country. We have military bases and resources deployed there. Can you imagine the business investment that is there? Fine you say - who cares about these businesses - yeah, well the US employees of those companies care, the investors in those companies care - likely your 401K, my 401K, everyone's 401K has holdings in those companies. You ready to take the hit in your own pocketbook? What about your retired parents that rely on dividends from those companies?[CN]

It's a simple thing to say - yeah, leave and let them fend for themselves. The reality is it's not that easy.[CN]

Todd, don't worry about Leon. He's part of the north korean cyber division. He's one of the 1,500 people in a country of 25,000,000 with access to the internet, and his sole occupation is defending the child raping, I mean loving, god king, PRC puppet, I mean glorious leader.[CN]

well I suggested that installed both vision and heat detection security camera along the border with automatic weapon without a military person present, so they can make all the faces on monitor screen as the North can't see, if the north think there is no one watching anymore, they will be surprise if they try anything stupid.[CN]

We are technically still at war. NK makes threats and tries to increase their weaponry. We should just attack them with conventional exotic weaponry.[CN]

This is hardly anything new. My brother served along the DMZ many years ago (among other places) and according to him, it's been pretty common for both sides to taunt the other. Funny how Kim isn't complaining about hanging/displaying the bodies of people his family accuses of being spies from the South along the fences for all to view but he finds "odd noises" to be troubling. Whatever, dude.

I'm not surprised.......

This poor sap only has the whole world ready to bend him over and shaft him and the UN says "unsubstantiated".

Believe in our warmongers that we do have special forces in their country and the propaganda machine is up and running to continue to rain on this poor saps country.

Anything to put pressure on Russia and China.....

Our neocons are taking us to war whether we like it or not. They've got to blame the collapse of the dollar on some other than themselves.

"Strange noises" and "disgusting facial expressions" cause an international incident. Wow. Is it just me, or does North Korea seem to be ruled by children? (Mommy, Jimmy pointed at me, stuck his tongue out, and called me a name!) Or, perhaps, this is isolated North Korea's attempt at embracing the new PC of the west. We are hurting their "self-esteem".

[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
Michael

And here I thought the North Korean Army had tough soldiers. Evidently they can't handle being pointed at or gestures or noises. Wow. I bet our soldiers just became petrified of offending North Korea. What a joke! All North Korea can do is threaten slaughter of civilians. Their military would be completely decimated by ours or even just South Korea's.

Its not hard to provoke the North Koreans . Maybe we should give each soldier on the border a beautiful 12 inch sandwich to eat in full sight of the NK armed forces each day . Subway , Jimmy John's, Quizno's doesn't matter .

No #$%$. I'd build a Taco Bell right on the border in sight of North Korean troops.

The entire border should look like two different places so the guards who stand in North are FORCED to smell the food, FORCED to see people eating it, knowing that NK trooper is going home to rice plate.
