The 2 "Great British Whines": 1) We hate Yankee interventionism. 2) We hate that the Yanks took so long to intervene and save our necks in the 2 WW's.WENTWORTH
The French were all in HIDING, LOL! Thank goodness the BRAVE BRITISH were there to save their country FOR them!NYCKate132Reply toWENTWORTH
Not according to Dwight D. Eisenhower, who praised the invaluable contribution of the French Resistance. Let's also not forget that France, Belgium etc. were still re-building from tremendous losses and destruction of WWI, the Depression, etc. They took the physical brunt, more so than many.ASReply toWENTWORTH
WENTWORTH 30,000 French troops maintained an extremely effective rear guard defense at Dunkirk allowing 350,000 British troops to throw down all their weapons and flee back to Britain. A few months later 100,000 British troops surrendered to 25,000 starving and ill equipped Japanese at Singapore. Pity there weren't some French troops at Singapore to protect the Brits.Pink Panther
Interesting DM but we stood alone for 2 years against the Luftwaffe and dodgy tash supported by our colonial family before the Yanks got out of bed, anychance of some pics? Also without the Russians we would never have won it, any chance of any pics?ROBURReply toPink Panther
John -- Why are you Yanks always so ignorant? What 53 nations are you talking about? After 1940 there was only Britain and its empire fighting (together with Greece until April 1941) until late June 1941 when the USSR was invaded. After you late-comers, I don;t recall any other significant nation joining the conflict - unless you mean Brazil! Lol!TwoToneTartanReply toPink Panther
bhqz - No, the Brits had rifles in their hands instead of cameras. Alone, fighting for our very survival until Germany declared war on the USA - yes, it was that way round! Also by the way, Britain declared on Japan BEFORE the USA did! Those are FACTS, do feel free to check them out.Yankee Nationalist 2Reply toPink Panther
smartbone, I'm sure that is what you'd like to think, but in actuality they're far too busy urinating on your war memorials. Also, I have a degree in English from Yale, so I'm in no need of a lecture from you on the English language. My dictionary tells me "colorize" (or "colourise" in your case) has been in use since 1979. It's defined as "to add color to by means of a computer."MainlineflReply toPink Panther
Two tone - you were also the first to surrender to Japan as well. And for the record we weren't tied to your hip. This country had enough of EU conflict one generation before and that war still makes no sense for the carnage inflicted. Half of it between royalty who were actually related.BohemondReply toPink Panther
*AHEM* The reason Mr Enos does almost entirely pictures taken by US military photographers is because they those photos are all, by law, in the public domain. Pictures taken by British military photographers are under Crown copyright and may not be reproduced without permission and royalties.Nedarc
On D-Day at Normandy the American Casulties were 2,499 all other Allies casualties on that day totaled 1,914 (look it up). Omaha was the deadliest beach of the other four. For some of you who do not know your History and posting lies I would suggest a history lesson before you make fools out of yourselves. My Dad was with the 52nd Troop Carrier Wing dropping the Airborne behind enemy lines the night before the landing in unescorted unarmed C-47's and some towing gliders which they called for good reason 'flying coffins'. Once again America came to the rescue as in WW1. You brave but sometimes uninformed People would be speaking German today if it wasn't for the USA...Period !LenReply toNedarc
"...you brave but sometimes uninformed People would be speaking German today if it wasn't for the USA..." ~~~~~~~~ Every time I see this nonsense I'm reminded that the teaching of history in our schools leaves a lot to be desired. Some times it's hard to tell whether the OP actually believes what s/he's saying, or whether it's just a little bit of unsophisticated trolling.Hillary Blows
If the US were in WW II today we'd lose! Sad but true! Obama would run for cover!ArchbishopBanterbury
Where are the pictures of the French soldiers fighting for their country?dd33
2 million Indians volunteered to fight in WW2 for Britian. As usual they are ignored. They went through hell especially in the Japanese prisoner of war camps. Very sad.Tennessean
You might think you're going to read comments praising this young man for colorizing (colourizing) some WWII photos. But no, you're going to read comments from Brits whining (whinging) about the facts that no Brits are in the photos. That will lead to comments about how the American (Yanks) downplay the British contribution to the War and assaulted the easy beach, that Americans can't spell, are stupid, etc. etc. and you thought it was about this 19 year old. Of course not.Be AwareReply toTennessean
Take a chill pill, Tenn. We (Americans and English) rib each other all the time, but in the end, we're still related. You might find one in 100 who are trolls, but with those odds, roll with the punches and enjoy the camaraderie! Heck, you're interacting with the English!ElsieWReply toTennessean
I think most people know and acknowledge that the Normandy Landings took place on several beach heads, with troops from many allied nations taking part. They also know and acknowledge that a photographer can only be in one place at any one time, so has a limited number of choices. Let's be grateful that the photographer survived so that his pictures could be enhanced by a modern young man and shared with us all today.GalahadReply toTennessean
Feddup, Yorkshire, United Kingdom: Why would you expect to see photos of other than Americans in an article about photos of Americans? That's like expecting to see British troopsin Saving Private Ryan--a movie made for the American market, about an American military mission carried out by American personnel in the American sector of the Normandy Beachhead. I presume you would have expected to find some British commandos in it, to show the incompetent US Rangers how things were done.Purple Panther
Let me give you Americans an example of how infuriating Hollywood war films can be to British people. In films such as 'Patton' and 'Band of Brothers' Americans are glorified while British and Canadians are ignored or even ridiculed (as in 'A Bridge Too Far'). Patton did not 'break out' in Normandy. In fact he 'walked out' in the words of his fellow generals such as Bradley. All he did was follow the retreating Germans. It was Monty's breakout not Patton¿s. The claim (Bridge Too Far) that he was the only general the Germans respected is a myth invented by Hollywood, originally for the film 'Patton'. In Sicily as in Normandy the British did the fighting and Patton did the boasting.JoNvirginiaReply toPurple Panther
Looks like you have your panties in a wad......I mean REALLY, did you expect anything but a bunch of BS from Hollywood? You do realize that their BS doesn't stop with war movies right?? It's called entertainment NOT documentaries. If you want the truth, try reading a history book.John TavernierReply toPurple Panther
Hollywood usually gets things wrong, but this about how Monty did everything is roundly negated by just about every history book, America, British, etc. He was almost removed from command by Eisenhower due to sitting "on his laurels" outside of Caen and not keeping to the timetable.milspecteesReply toPurple Panther
So what? American movies are made from an American point of view for American audiences. You can use the same argument to criticize British movies falsely showing that the Brits won the war single-handedly. Only difference is, no-one wants to watch the British moviesadamtwinReply toPurple Panther
milspectees - 'Eh, no-one wants to watch British war films? You're talking nonsense there are many classics that far outshine films made from other international productions, such as, The Dam Busters, The Battle of Britain, The Cruel Sea, Where Eagles Dare, The Way Ahead, The Great Escape, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Zulu, 633 Squadron, to name but a few.Coyolito
Great photos, let the world remember who has always been the beacon of freedom and good for the last 150 years... America. God bless America
