Kim Jong-un has declared himself 'extremely happy' as pictures of him beaming on a farm visit were released - despite floods in North Korea which have left 140,000 people in urgent need of help.

Pictures released today show the despot cheerfully surveying varieties of corn and rice grown on a state-run farm.

He declared he was pleased with work being done at Farm No 1116, which is run by the Korean People's Army, telling the state-controlled news agency, KCNA: 'When I see the achievements on the farm I feel an uplifting of the chest and my mood is meliorated.'

A new variety of corn, which the North Korean leader is calling 'Pyongok No 9', has been developed at the farm.

He praised the 'truly great' farm workers and researchers, stating the crops can withstand drought and natural disasters.

It is unclear when the pictures were taken, but their release comes after the secretive nation admitted thousands of its citizens have been left homeless by huge floods in the northeast.

KCNA reported that people affected by the heaviest downpour in the region since 1945 are 'suffering from great hardship'.

It said 'tens of thousands' of buildings had been destroyed in the heavy rainfall.

Heavy rains resulting from Typhoon Lionrock triggered flooding in the Musan and Yonsa counties, as well as Hoeryong City in the North Hamgyong province.

The UN's Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states that so far 133 people have been killed, 395 people are missing, and 140,000 people are in 'urgent need of assistance'. 

Chris Staines, who heads a Red Cross delegation in North Korea, described it as a 'a very major and complex disaster'.

He said: 'The floods came through with such force, they destroyed everything in their path.'

In Hoeryong City, he stated, there was 'barely a building left unscathed'.

Many areas are entirely cut off as a result of the flooding.
