Eats, shoots then leaves. Sounds like my ex[CN]

饱餐一顿,大吵一架,转身离开,听起来像我的前度啊。

上天保佑,可怜的小熊猫被囚禁了这么久。

They are captive to bamboo. They have to munch on it for about twenty hours a day.[CN]

他们喜欢吃竹子。一天24小时吃都不会腻。

Agreed Alza. Nitch species like Panda's do not have a chance to survive in the long run. They are not adaptable and have very specific requirements. Also, as you stated, because they only eat bamboo they are basically starving all the time. The reason why they only reproduce about every 10 years. Man is responsible for much...and there are many species we can save from our own folly...but Panda's are not one of them.[CN]

Sad day for then maybe but not half as sad as poaching a wild panda and keeping it captive for near enough 40 years. The Victorian stance on the need to capture specimens to prove they exist has been made obsolete by our ability to travel and see creatures in more natural habitats , David Attenborough and his team, and Oceanographers etc.[CN]

Without human intervention, Pandas would have deservedly become extinct decades ago. Survival of the fittest and all that. They are naturally too lazy to breed and are only fertile a few days a year. How much money has been wasted on trying to encourage them to (reluctantly and expensively) breed at the expense of other endangered, and more worthy species?? A fortune has been spent on these animals because they look cute. What about endangered snakes or fish? Eeuww. not so cute eh?

Captivity the key word. I'd rather live my life in freedom, than to die in captivity.

Gone to a better world? The panda is dead - they're not daft enough to make up silly religious beliefs

Every living creature has nephish, a soul. It's not any religious beliefs that give you that. And yes life always continues on in the next dimension. So many that live today are in for a surprise some day...I hope a pleasant one.

For all those commenters who don't know, ocean park is a theme park but also a zoo. It strongly advocates for fair animal treatment and has partnered up with the WWF. They treat pandas there extremely well - I've worked as part of their company for 10 years and have seen the treatment of the pandas. And FYI, pandas live much longer in captivity, judging by how the forests and their homes are being destroyed each day.

I am glad you responded. I was feeling sad that she died all alone in a cold theme park. I still wish she could have been free, but I am happier knowing that. Thank you Isabella.

I have been to Ocean Park and I assume I must have seen this Panda. Their enclosure was large, interesting, built on an incline and also offered separation should the Pandas need time apart. In my opinion it is much better than Vienna's Panda enclosure and the Pandas there are extremely happy and even breeding. Pandas need help from humans. Zoos aren't all bad.

Why was this creature in captivity? This is so sad. Why won't they allow these animals to stay in the juggle or whatever? They need to be freed. It's makes me angry?

SaunterReply toMoyus4real
Sadly if that had happened by now there'd be no panda's left at all. The breeding programmes going on in China have made a huge difference to whether panda's survive or become extinct. Personally I really dislike zoo's, would much prefer it if animals in captivity were in parks rather than cages and of course nothing can beat the wild.....

She lived nearly 20 years longer than a panda in the wild and 4-5 years longer than most in captivity. Since she was obviously suffering and declining rapidly, the zoo did her a final kindness. Thank you Jia Hia, for the joy you brought the world; rest in peace. And gratitude to the zoo for respecting her enough to spare her from more suffering.

RIP Jia Jia. I am certain she was well treated, but I cannot help feeling sad she wasn't able to spend her last years with others of her kind. Free, to die of old age naturally.
