Tips to get rid of telemarketers from former phone marketer

如何摆脱电话营销

A former telemarketer is revealing how you can stop unwanted calls from phone marketers. Erica Elson gave ABC one of her many tips. "There's a fine line between being too rude and being too friendly. You just want to remain polite but not reveal any personal information," she says.

Not giving personal information is also important for security reasons - according to the Better Business Bureau, telemarketing scams are becoming a common approach to deceive people and steal their information.

Although many of us have tried just about everything to stop the calls -- ignoring them, giving the telemarketer excuses or saying "not right now" -- Elson says those escape routes are just going to put you right back on the call list.

In a piece she wrote for the August issue of Reader's Digest, Elson shared her insights with readers who are tired of the phone calls.

Let's start with what not to do:

1. Don't just hang up. You'll be listed as "did not answer" and will continue to receive phone calls until you have a conversation.

2. Don't engage. Any conversation could lead the telemarketer to believe all you need is more convincing before you buy.

Elson provided similar tips for Lifehacker in March, saying, "Telemarketers literally have a script that tells them how to respond to every objection."

So how can you win this battle? Apparently all you have to do is say "no" three times, which lets the seller know you're not into it.

The Huffington Post also notes that requesting to be put on the "Do Not Call" list should stop the calls from that company. Elson agrees, saying it's the most efficient way.

And you could go even further by signing up for the National Do Not Call Registry. Elson says verbally telling the marketer to place you on the list and signing up online makes it illegal for telemarketers to call you.

Elson was a telemarketer for two years and says using these tips will not only save you time but will help out the telemarketer as well.

If they keep on bugging you, whisper into the phone like you are talking to someone nearby "Quick, press that little red button. We've got them this time." They won't know what you are up to.

I have a better way. When I realize it's a telemarketer I say "praise Jesus, he sent me someone to talk to about salvation". It only backfires when the right to life folks call.

I never answer calls from people who don't know who they are.

And what if they know who they are? LOL. Try, who YOU don't know.

Calls that show up as "unknown caller", "unavailable", etc. I assume they do not know who they are, so why I would want to talk to them?

I got on it when it first started, but it didn't keep all calls blocked by any means. There are unfortunate loopholes. If I get a call from someone I haven't contacted about donating or buying something, I just say to send me literature or that I'm just not interested......and I ask (no, I order) them to take my name and number off their list. After all, my number's not listed, so obviousy they just do auto-dialing and it's next on the dial-list.

I remember some lady called a few years back and as soon as I picked up she starts yelling:" Congratulations, You've just won a trip, quick go get a pin because I want you to write something very important!" I told her: "OK, I'll be right back!" I put the phone right by this Disc player and found the loudest, nosiest Twisted Sister song and cranked it up!
She never called back!

Does that pin write as well as a pen? Is Twisted Sister still the "nosiest" or have they changed to the noisiest?

Or you can pretend you don't understand what she's saying and ask her to repeat what she said, over and over and over. "So sorry, but my hearing aid doesn't seem to be working properly.....what? what? what?"
I do like the horrible loud music, though!

I didn't think they still did that...I haven't had one in almost 10 years. I also do not have a land line, or my name in the phone book listings, and went on the do not call list the moment I first heard of it. Found a way to get rid of those pesky collections call....caller ID. If you are not on my contact list....you will not be able to make contact.

LOL - How about paying your bills on time Bruce? That'd stop those "pesky collection calls" rather quick. Deadbeat.

Tell them, just a minute let me turn my recorder on...

The Do Not Call Registry is a joke. I continually get calls from telemarketers. Google is actually the worst offender. We must have signed up for something with them and now they harass us with calls on a daily basis. Luckily I don't pick up the phone anymore unless I know who it is. But the constant ringing disturbs the peace. "Press one to talk to a representative, press two to be taken off the list." Are these telemarketers actually "getting" people? All they do is make me hate them. If I was going to advertise with them, buy their service, or whatever, now I'm not because I hate them.

Or check your Husband's Internet activity, he could also be surfing porn and had signed up for a site to watch flicks, only takes one. That'd be the quickest way for you to receive your Google calls. Not so happy in paradise?

I got rid of a pesky telemarketer once by asking him what he was wearing, and then starting to breathe heavily into the phone. For some reason, he terminated the call.

I'm on the Do not call list now since the Do not call list came out and my number is unlisted and we still get the calls. Don't know how they get my number cause they don't address me 99.9% of the time but they still call.I have tried this what they have suggested and they have still call even put in a complaint with the Do not call list cause the place that calls that tells me that I won a cruise drives me nuts.LOL

I usually let them say a few words and say loudly, " I don't do business on the phone" Then hang up.

That is EXACTLY what my husband does.
All the time.
Then he hangs up.

I use a portable "boat horn" when they start asking questions. after that they never call back. the ones I hate the most are the ones using a "majic Jack" number thru their computer. never able to call them back.

I use one of those little portable air horns that Seinfeld used on one of the shows. They might call back, but I get a kick out of it.

I have several 800,888 numbers blocked on my phone system. Some of them were calling 2-3 times a day everyday. That do not call list is a farce.

Funny how many are writing to explain their time-wasting practices, which only ensure you stay on their lists to call back. The 2 methods explained in this article make a lot of sense and they work. Still, if you like wasting your time and having to talk to these folks in the future, it's certainly your right.

Caller ID is an imperfect solution to a problem that should not exist, scams and uninvited solicitations.

I find an air horn blast to be rather effective.

Do Not Call List registry DOES NOT STOP several Marketeers such as cardmember services ("We can get you a better interest rate"). They ignore the law and are abusive of it
