"The Huffington Post also notes that requesting to be put on the "Do Not Call" list should stop the calls from that company."

Ha-ha, leave it to HuffPost to get that wrong, too. First telemarketers ignore this rule regularly--and what can you do about it?--and secondly they'll claim that this is not a sales call--it's a service call! (As if that makes any difference to "Do Not Call.)

When they ignore the DNC rule, report them on the FTC's page. I spoke to someone in New York state government who pulls reports and goes after the worst offenders. In my case, it was a chimney cleaning company who routinely ignored the DNC law.

Anoither tactice I discovered accidently is to quickly advise the caller that, wow! you just bought that very thing last week--and let me spend five minutes telling you how great it is...

Where it says "say no three times" - do you have to say, "no, not interested" three times, or like a magic chant : "no no no"

I mean. If that's all it takes....the telemarketer hears the magic word 'no' three times, keeps count, and then goes, "doh! this one is not interested, I will never bother him again!" This information should be MUCH more well known!

this whole story is BS. The tips are a lot of crap. Aol just needs filler with attractive titles to keep you surfing their site so they can display more ads. The DNC list i s a total farce. Nothing works. Ignore unknown callers. If you answer - do not engage them in any way.

“Muy buenos días. Habla el Sr. González. ¿En qué le puedo servir?” [telemarketer hangs up]

If the caller is a debt collector and you take the call be aware that all 50 states have statutes of limitations on debt. If you take the call chances are you start to clock all over again. See Fair debt collection practices act. http://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/rules/rulemaking-regulatory-reform-proceedings/fair-debt-collection-practices-act-text#805

I usually just say "I am not interested, have a nice day" and hang up while they are still going through their script.

If I am too slow, I tell them I don't do business with cold callers, so if they give me their web site I will check it out. if they try to give me their script I go back to paragraph 1 above.

but most times we just don't pick up the phone.

What do you do after you have placed your name on the DNC registry, one time told them to place you on DNC list, and yet, some year later, you're still receiving calls daily; sometimes twice a day. Oh, that's after you've written the FCC and you Congressional Rep.
How do you find who is actually responsible for these calls?
The Credit Card call has even been on TV, the company was fined, and they keep calling.

Do not call list is ignored. There are no teeth for punishing callers. Many of them use software that "spoofs" caller ID by showing a number that is similar to your own (off by a couple of digits). Telling them to put you on their "don't call" list doesn't work either. One outfit, Credit Card services, has robo-called me as many as three times in one week.
If I get a real person on the call I often try to engage them in conversation (offering no personal info) then ask if they are paid by commission or number of calls made. I don't wait for an answer, I simply say I've just cost you money by tying up your time. Then I hang up.
By the way, you don't need an air horn if that's the way you want to go. A police whistle actually works just as well.

You can make a lot of money screwing with telemarketers. Each call is worth money to you if you know how to set up the telemarketer, as they are violating FEDERAL LAW. Do some research and make money! ...and have fun...don't get mad...get even!

do not call list......that means an actual list is maintained with numbers that somehow accidentally on purpose seems to find its way in the hands of donkeycrat scabs to be sold. dont answer the calls, dont answer blocked id callers .... dont answer calls ...they will move on

This article is a waste of time, it offers NOTHING in the way of stopping the call, the so called "tips"....As if saying no three times or asking to be put on their don't call list hasn't been tried by everyone for decades? I opened this article expecting some REAL tips, got the same old canned crap that has never worked. Telemarketers have become more rude and persistent in the past several years, ask them to remove you from their calling list and they hang up on you and call back an hour later. We have a home business so the govt DNC list doesn't work for us. A dozen times a day I get calls asking "Can I speak to the business owner", my response is always NO, when they ask when a better time is to call the business owner, I say NEVER. Gotta love the ones that when I say "no, I'm not interested in what you are selling" and then they ARGUE with me. They are bottom feeders!

When I get a telemarketer I ask "What is your name?"

Then "What is your company?"
"Where are you located?"
"What is your phone number?"

They eventually ask "why?" and I inform them "I want to make sure that when I report them for violating the do not list I get the facts right. then I report them.
They do not call back.

I usually tell them, "hold on while I take off my clothes and get some feathers". They hang up first.

The DO NOT CALL LIST is a joke. I have been on it for years and years. I report some numbers but nothing changes. I still get calls and they don't care if you tell them you are on the list. They hang up but another one just calls back again another day. Now with using other phone numbers there is no way to track them or report them.

On some of the "recorded" phone calls, I've found if you can stand to listen to the whole thing, they tell you what to do if you don't want to receive anymore calls...It's worked on the ones I've done that with.

Years ago I signed up on the DO NOT CALL list. The calls stopped for a while, then they began after superstorm Sandy hit the east coast. I wonder if all that water erased all those phone numbers on the list?

unfortunately, there are many exceptions to the federal do not call list. those include non-profits, companies you're currently doing business with, & surprise, surprise, politicians. additionally, every 7 years, you need to update your inclusion in the do not call list. finally, if they're calling on your landline, simply let an answering machine screen your calls. eventually, the telemarketing calls will subside.

You can use your phone companies "call block" feature. I add them to the call block list when I can. That helps a little as long as they are using their REAL phone number.
