Time is money to a telemarketer. If you're not going to buy, they want to get rid of you and find someone that will buy. Solution? I keep them on the phone as long as possible, wasting their valuable time. They soon get the hint and quit calling.

Once, after telling one no, repeatedly, I finally said okay. The lady asked for a credit card. I said it didn't matter, just pick one. She said she didn't know which one I preferred. I again said that it didn't matter, just go to her purse and pick one. Why would she use one of hers, she asked. I replied, you may as well use one of yours, because I'm not giving you one of mine. Haven't had a call from that company since.

Oh, for heaven's sake! Use caller ID and just don't answer if you don't recognize the number. If it's important to them, they'll leave a message. Then you can decide if it's important to you. Wastes less of your time.

My wife and I are in competition as to who can keep them alking the longest. We have a couple of old gift card numbers that are actual Visa and Mastercard numbers, the address of a vacant lot down the block and made up SSI numbers. She is in the lead at 16 minutes so I have to try harder. When they ask for a phone number we use the Appleton Police Department non emergency number. If I'm not able to play with them I tell the caller that I'm just getting to work so give me 5 minutes and call back on my office line, which is the Police department number.

i feel sorry for the person who has to answer the calls at the PD, they have important work to do and do not have the time to field these calls all day , they do not have a way to stop the calls any more than you do. Even though it is non emergency number, citizens still call that number when they need non emergent help. Maybe a non working number would be best and not spoil your fun or interrupt the services of your local PD.

I am going to change the number to our local Congressman. That will make me feel better also.

I screen all my calls...don't recognize the number? I don't pick up..it's it's legit ,they will leave a message. The other callers that DO leave a message, if it's a telemarketer, I just delete it.

The last thing I want to do is make something better for the telemarketer.

When I receive a live voice call, I use a stage whisper and say, " It's done. I killed the all the s o bs . there is blood everywhere!"
There is often a pause, a gasp, and the phone goes dead

Ask them if they know who their real father is and hang up

Maybe if our government, for which we are grossly overtaxed, administered the "do not call list" and punished companies who violate it, this would not be an issue. I am sure there are government officials making big salaries for doing nothing along these lines.

the Gov. put his list in place to update THEIR call list.... the Gov. is exempt from the Natl DNC registry. Politicians use this list during elections times. It was put in place not to protect us from Solicitors...but update their calling list and to eliminate competing with Solicitors.

I have a good tip, use your caller ID and do not answer any phone call you do not know.

Sandie Reply to Greeneyes

that is they only method that works ! took me several months of non stop phone ringing (i finally just turned the ringer off and used the caller id on the tv to know when someone I wanted to talk to calls. Eventually, with no answers, my number fell off their list.

Use Mr. Number and block the calls and keep doing it. They will often change numbers to get past blocks so just keep blocking them.

I am on the "do not call list" registry and still get several calls each week. They now call from my local exchange with a name that looks familiar but when you answer it is the old credit card scam. I have even told them that I do not have a credit card and still they call. In a one months time they have called me over 25 times and I have repeatedly asked them not to call! I have resorted to blowing on a cheap whistle when they call, hoping it will hurt their ears as their calls are hurting mine. I have even gotten calls that my caller ID says is from me and my phone number listed! Nothint seems to work. I have been on the national "do not call" list from the beginning but it does not work for most telemarketers! But I keep reporting them every time. I know that one local Dish dealer did get fined for making so many calls, one that I also was reporting on. Just very irritating. Worse are the political calls, one research place called me 4 times in one day.

the Natl DNC list is a farce. Putting your number on it only updates the list with your current working information. Politicians are exempt from the list , so expect calls during Elections. Also, that list is hacked all the time. Best to remove your number from it. It is a way to get unlisted numbers. i just learned to use caller id and never answer unknown numbers, let it ring andring, it can get annoying, but gradually you will start falling off list. I just turned the ringer off and used the Caller ID that pops up on my TV screen. Do not use an answering machine either, contact is contact, even if it is an answering machine, they will just keep calling until you answer. So., just never answer. It took several months, but the calls finally slowed down and stopped.

Kay the only way to completely get rid of them is to say Please remove me from your calling list. I know there is a fine for not complying. and I know I am being recorded so you will face penalty if you do not remove me from your list. Have a nice day. that's it. I was a telemarketer for over 14 yrs. believe me I followed the rules and I did remove people from the list by hearing that statement. If you say you are on do not call list. if they are charity or political they are exempt. so use that statement I gave you it works

Most of the "suggestions" are bunk. After a short conversation with someone who obviously did like what he was doing, he admitted that he would be fired if he tried to remove anyones number. Secondly, remarking they are violating the Do Not Call list usually results in laughter and comments like "oooo, I'm so scared." The vast majority of the caller ID numbers shown are forged. I even had a telemarketer call me right back and COMPLAIN I hung up on her..!! Complain to your state and fed representives about the ever increasing marketing calls. If you don't raise a ruckus it will only get worse.

that is such a lie they don't get fired for removing a number. More likely they will be fired for not removing a number at the customers request. Any legitimate organization that hires telemarketing co. knows the rules.

They use generated computer call numbers to call from a variety of numbers that are probably not even in the area code they are calling from. Some companies like Vonage offer them to customers to have different numbers for people to contact them, but sometimes telemarketers and collection agencies highjack loads of them to dupe the public. My understanding is that businesses are not supposed to be permitted to do that, but since when did a telemarketer or collection agency follow the laws?

Answer the phone, the identify yourself as an FBI agent, and ask how they got this number, and you are working on a crime scene and they just became a suspect.

false information leads to investigation I wouldn't do that

Because telemarketers are government agents? Not likely. They have no legal authority and there is no law that says you have to give any correct information to a telemarketer. Nice try though.

Why doesn't Congress just get real and disallow cold-calling of private residences? If I'm looking for something, I'll seek you out. I don't need you checking in with me to see if I need your product.

It's worse than a virus, you can't stop them. With the advance in software, they can call you from any number of different source numbers, and asking them to put you on a no call list is like a big joke to them.

The latest gig is having your cell phone ring twice. If you are lured into calling back on the last number to phone you, it will be from an island and you will be charged for your call.

Take number. Report to your states AG office, ripoff report and other sites....get on don't call list...but most of all call your rep/senator and ask them what they are doing. these people PREY on SENIORS to a sickening extent. this article is actually pretty stupid and useless content wise.

Actually the article is very effective. A lot of people like you comment and give others helpful hints.

I disagree with the Nat. DNC list. The min. you put your name on that list, you just updated that list with your current information. Politicians are exempt from this list and your phone will ring non stop during election time. The list gets hacked and the calls never end. Next, turn off or down your phone ringer and rely on the Caller ID that pops up on your tv screen and don't answer unknown numbers, sooner or later when they never get an answer your number will drop off the caller list. Next ...get a cell phone and dont give your number out to anyone that is not Family or a Dr's office. Next..do not sign up for Store Drawing for Prizes...the small print on the back even says your number will be given out to marketers.
