One is a bird, the rest are mammals. I remember when my children did this in Grade One. I think they called groups of similar things 'sets'.TemitiReply toTemiti
The mathematical concept being taught is sets, not counting. Sets (or groups) are taught in Grade one or Kindergarten. You only need to look at the answers to 1) and 2) to work out the answer to 3). My children learned this in Grade One, but in case you don't believe me, my husband is a Maths professor and has confirmed the answer. Maths is about a lot of things including sets and logic, not just counting which childtren usually learn before they go to school. So, no, I'm afraid it is not about counting feet, or tails, or legs - as you can see from 1) and 2). I hope that helps :)Romeo16
I disagree with the teacher who said the question depends on first grader logic. Everyone, regardless of age, should reach the same conclusion from a math question. 2 + 2 =4. Always.NarrowBoater
There seem to be many different, but none the less, correct answers here. As long as a child can logically support an answer, then it should not be deemed wrong! I was told by an accredited 11+ marker, that, many years ago, children 'failed' the 11+ because their answers, although logically correct, did not comply with the answers supplied. Sad, that more creative thinkers were denied a grammar school education because of a rigid marking system. Let's hope that this doesn't happen again when new grammar schools are introduced.Catman
It's a maths question i.e. it isn't about biology and categories of animals. What is different in regards to numbers? Feet like the teacher said.
