well the chicken can fly , but so can pigs sometimes , and the cow managed to get over the moon. so its either the cat or the rabbit. nope , id pass on this one. too hard. by the way , that rabbit is possessed by some malevolent demon. maybe thats it ! yes the rabbit.

One is a bird, the rest are mammals. I remember when my children did this in Grade One. I think they called groups of similar things 'sets'.

It's a maths question so it would be about a certain number of things that are different e.g. feet.

The mathematical concept being taught is sets, not counting. Sets (or groups) are taught in Grade one or Kindergarten. You only need to look at the answers to 1) and 2) to work out the answer to 3). My children learned this in Grade One, but in case you don't believe me, my husband is a Maths professor and has confirmed the answer. Maths is about a lot of things including sets and logic, not just counting which childtren usually learn before they go to school. So, no, I'm afraid it is not about counting feet, or tails, or legs - as you can see from 1) and 2). I hope that helps :)

The chicken cos it's the only animal with feathers, all the others have hair.. is just one of the many possible answers

chicken - it was born in an egg and hatched to peck grain the others were live birthed and suckled... presumably

Everyone keeps saying chicken because it only 2 legs but nobody seems to have noticed the chicken is A: The only bird and B: The only one that has feathers.

It's a MATH question......not a food question, a zodiac question, etc.

I disagree with the teacher who said the question depends on first grader logic. Everyone, regardless of age, should reach the same conclusion from a math question. 2 + 2 =4. Always.

Or 22 ;)

I would go for the Chicken. None of the others lay eggs, none of the others are Avian, a Chicken only has 2 feet, all the others have 4 feet.

There seem to be many different, but none the less, correct answers here. As long as a child can logically support an answer, then it should not be deemed wrong! I was told by an accredited 11+ marker, that, many years ago, children 'failed' the 11+ because their answers, although logically correct, did not comply with the answers supplied. Sad, that more creative thinkers were denied a grammar school education because of a rigid marking system. Let's hope that this doesn't happen again when new grammar schools are introduced.

It's a maths question i.e. it isn't about biology and categories of animals. What is different in regards to numbers? Feet like the teacher said.

ok, then how was the fish different in terms of numbers? Is every question about numbers of legs?

The fish has zero legs. Zero is a number.

It is a maths question about sets (or groups) not arithmetc. Look at answers one and two to find the answer to three. Groups (sets) are something you learn in kindergarten and Grade one.

Chicken because all other animals have 4 legs

Chicken because it is the only bird.

Or how about chicken because it is much tastier than the others.

Don't know if I can agree with you there, Bigbird. There's nothing like a really good steak...but chicken is pretty good too.

The chicken, it is not a mammal.

Not so fast....perhaps the chicken 'identifies' as a mammal.

Not that hard -- they all have four legs except the chicken

FFS! It was a MATHS question so the answer must surely relate to numbers - in this case the number of legs. Other answers might be correct in other contexts but not in this.
