Chinese phone maker Xioami has unveiled a new mobile with a screen that stretches across almost the entire front of the device.

The Mi Mix concept phone sports a large 6.4-inch display that covers a massive 91.3 per cent of the available space on the handset.

In comparison, the iPhone 7 Plus screen covers around 67.7 per cent of the surface area available. 

The 'edgeless' design of the large 17:9 screen means that it has almost no bezel.

Xiaomi CEO and founder Lei Jun calls the phone 'a glimpse at what the phone of the future looks like', reports TechCrunch.

The handset's distinctive aesthetics were created by French designer Philippe Starck.

Along with the large screen, the phone features a 16MP rear camera, a 4400mAh battery and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor. 

The maker has made a few changes in order to stretch the phone to the edges of the handset, including dropping all of the physical buttons from the front of the device.

Featuring a ceramic body, the Mi Mix phone does not have a physical earpiece speaker.

Instead, the handset uses 'cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic technology'. 

A ceramic component converts electrical signals into mechanical energy to enable users to produce audio.

It has ditched the traditional front-facing infrared proximity sensor in favour of an ultrasonic sensor. 

What's more, the front camera has been moved down from above the screen to the bottom right corner.

The phone can be rotated upside down for taking selfies, says Xioami. 

The phone has a price tag of RMB 3,499 (£426/$516) for the 128GB version, while the 256GB model with a gold trim will cost RMB 3,999 (£487/$590)

The phone is due to go on sale in China next month with limited availability - and the maker is remaining silent on how many phones will actually be available. 

The maker has not confirmed whether it will be making the phone available outside of China.  

Last week, video emerged that appeared to show an entirely flat phone prototype made by Xiaomi.

A clip posted on video-sharing site Youku shows a person scrolling through apps on the flexible screen, which was bent to fit into the palm of a hand.
