DM, your journos need to travel more. I have been to several cities in China on many occasions and not all of them are like that all the time. Even in Shanghai, one of their largest cities (est 20-22 mil), there are little areas that are not packed to the gills. Yes, there are people who are pushy and they can be found all over the world too. However, a little manners go both ways and I've had pleasant interactions with the locals when you're not acting like a boorish tourist or expat.
