BBC viewers were scared stiff last night by dramatic footage in the long-awaited series Planet Earth 2 that showed dozens of snakes chasing baby iguanas.[CN]
The astonishing television which showed marine iguanas attempting to outrun a knot of racer snakes on Fernandina Island was labelled ‘the stuff of nightmares’.
Hatchlings
could be seen emerging from the sand of the Galápagos island in the
Pacific Ocean in June for what is the snakes’ best feeding opportunity
of the year.
The footage on BBC1 showed some iguanas outrun the snakes to safety by the sea while others were caught before the snakes wrapped themselves around them.
When the crew saw the snakes for the first time, they were too shocked to film - and host Sir David Attenborough had never seen anything like it either, it was claimed.
Among
the millions of viewers captivated by the footage shown at 8pm last
night was Olympic rower Will Satch, who described it as a ‘real life
horror film’.
He tweeted: ‘Bloody snakes chasing those poor sea swimming iguanas. David Attenborough is exactly what this world needs and plenty of him.’
Sir David's commentary told how the snakes’ eyes are poor, but they can detect movement and are on alert for other iguanas after seeing one.
Viewer
Alex Barreto praised the 'absolutely disgusting but incredible
footage', while Claire Macmillan expected to have ‘nightmares about
those racer snakes'.
And Reece Caddick said: 'I will 100 per cent have nightmares about those snakes on Planet Earth. Never thought I would be emotionally attached to an iguana.'
Meanwhile ITN lighting cameraman Matt Freestone hailed the sequence as ‘probably the most brilliantly edited piece of television I've seen in ten years’.
The hotly-anticipated series, which is formed of six parts and follows on from the first Planet Earth in 2006, has taken three years of filming and 117 filming trips.
The first episode focused on island life and used nine filming locations. Next week the show will look at mountain animals including a rare sighting of snow leopards.
MailOnline TV critic Jim Shelley said: ‘One chase scene and narrow escape was more thrilling than anything in James Bond and actually not that different.’
He
added that the racer snakes ‘sounded scarier and scary enough without
the sight of them hunting in packs, like a scene from Indiana Jones’.
And Daily Mail TV critic Christopher Stevens, who gave the first episode of the new series five stars, described last night's sequence as ‘truly edge-of-the-seat’.
He said the predators writhed together 'like a mythical animal with a dozen heads' and 'they looked like animated clay monsters from an old-fashioned horror movie'.
Meanwhile BBC chiefs will be celebrating today after the programme claimed a massive audience of 9.2million and a 36 per cent share of TV viewers.
This made it Britain's most watched natural history programme in more than 15 years - and it was more popular than the first series debut watched by 8.74million viewers.
And
it has also been revealed that the series does not feature any penguin
deaths because they look too much like humans, so it would upset
viewers.
The main reason I do not watch nature programmes is that I do not find it entertaining watching animals/reptiles being savagely killed by a predator(s). I know this is what happens in the wild and that nature is indiscriminately brutal, but it doesn't have to be filmed. I respect Sir David Attenborough stance in that he refuses to interfere or intervene with the harsh savagery of nature and its hardships, but does he have to film the suffering in such an intensely voyeuristic manner when a narrative will suffice?! We know the [unpleasant] outcome so there's no need to televise it in all its graphically violent detail. A little discretion and sensitivity on behalf of Sir David would go a long way.[CN]
I agree with you in that I also will not watch nature programmes for this reason. However, I simply choose not to watch them. If other people want to watch it then it is entirely up to them. There is clearly an audience for it if the programmes keep being produced. It is their choice to watch, just as it is our choice not to.[CN]
There is something deeply disturbing about Attenborough, he seems to be fascinated about anything concerning something being killed, this has trended throughout all of the programs he has been involved with, he certainly has a dark side which I for one am uncomfortable with, and will never watch any of his filming.[CN]
It is the laws of nature I'm afraid, look at us humans, killing, torturing, bombing, wars, famine, its the truth. What David Attenborough does, is film nature at its finest. Yes it is cruel, and I don't believe for one minute he has a dark side to him at all, he is one of the greatest documentary makers in the world, and without him we would not even begin to learn about other species on this wonderful world we are all living in. Open your eyes, and see the beauty for what it is. You are certainly missing out. What a pity.[CN]
Terrible programme. Discovery and National Geographic produce much better nature documentaries.David Attenborough should retire. Too much of him talking and over dramatising what was happening. The Hans Zimmer Music was too loud.BBC has really lost its way, Shut down the whole corporation and leter better companies such as the ones I mentioned above handle nature documentaries.I cannot beleive the TV tax was wasted on this dross.[CN]
There are many, many different aspects of wildlife behaviour YET the one dominating theme of wildlife shows on TV and particularly Attenborough's is the overwhelming focus on the 'chase' and subsequent death of the various species featured. I wonder why ? Would that be the main selling point by any chance ? Snuff movies for the sad people to enjoy.[CN]
When are these De-Sensitising Animal "Snuff" Movies going to be Banned.[CN]
Yeah that's right ban everything and we can all carry on living in 'blissful ignorance' anyway this is nowhere near as horrific as what your meat goes through at the slaughterhouse - just saying :-([CN]
