So why weren't they wearing seatbelts if the turbulence was that bad.

The pilot couldn't have had any indication that the plane was flying into it, otherwise he would have warned passengers.

Lolly310. The same fools that don't turn off their mobiles when they are on the flight.

I fly a lot and the last flights have been nothing but smooth as glass. As others have said, just keep your seatbelt on exactly was you do in a car (I hope!). I hate turbulence (who doesn't) but it's rare that it is at this level and they almost never cause crashes. It's amazing what airplanes endure. Anyway, wishing a speedy recovery to these poor people and the man filming a nice punch in the face. Have a g'day!

And they tell you it's ok to have a newborn baby on your lap . This is why I used to pay for an extra seat for the car seat to hold a baby.

Yes, it is ok to have an infant on your lap providing the seatbelt is fitted correctly. I can't tell you how many times I see parents with the seat belt so loose it not worth wearing!

Always leave your belt on and buckle up again every time you return to your seat. This is the third report of serious injuries due to unusually sever turbulence in a month, I wonder what's going on up there.

Probably all the hot air that Trump expels.

The latest theory is that increasing amounts of turbulence is caused by climate change (or it could be Brexit - gets the blame for everything else) :)

The number of times I have seen people ignoring crew commands, and seatbelt signs on flights is ridiculous.

It is truly amazing how much turbulence these planes can take and stay in one piece. Sorry for the passengers.

As a people we are so lucky that whatever the catastrophe, however bad the injuries, however awful the results someone will always be able to take a video or photo of it it to share on line.

Whether this is grossly exaggerated or not, the plane landed safely. I would image that is the most important thing

I can vouch about "clear air turbulence" unfortunately. This is nothing like normal bad turbulence. It's a whole different level and you think you are going to die. Flight to Grand Cayman, clear day and sunny. I'm in the forward lav of a Delta 757 and we are over the ocean just south of Cuba. Incident report says we went up 200ft. and then dropped 700ft. It all occurred in a few seconds. I was washing my hands and the sink stopper flew up and hit the ceiling. Thank God my head was already wedged against the ceiling or I may have broken my neck/back. Ended up on top of the closed toilet seat after the seat and cover slammed down. Lady in back broke her arm, FA's were floating I'm told. Lots of slightly injured and/or jittery people getting off the plane. I always wear my seatbelt now and when I am in the bathroom I wedge my arm against the ceiling or both walls. Once you go through clear air turbulence, short of a bomb nothing about flying will ever bother you again.

Consider yourself lucky the contents of the toilet weren't "floating".

Seat belts. That's why they are there. Use them. Pilots do.
