So why didn't the pilot tell the passengers to sit down and put seat belts on?

Clear air turbulence!!! You cannot see it and the radar 'turb' mode doesn't show it either!!

Planes should have seatbelts installed to stop this from happening...hang on.....

passengers not wearing their seat belts while they are seated.

Even when the Fasten Seat Belt sign is off, it is still advisable to keep the belt loosely fastened. Pilots are not psychic and clear air turbulence isn't visible on weather radar.

This is why I never undo my seatbelt while seated......

Gosh all those wise comments about seat belts. Difficult to.keep your belt on when queuing for the toilet or walking to the toilet. A seatbelt only prevents u being protected upwards not forwards. It will not stop you breaking your nose on the seat in front or your knees if you are tall

Most people are seated most of the time. I fly a lot and I always keep my seat belt fastened when seated. Are you saying people shouldn't?

But noses and knees heal probably relatively quickly. If you hit the ceiling it'd be far worse

It's not the damage the empty heads. do to themselves, it's what could happen to me if they hit you a high speed

Had I been on the fight I would feel bad for laughing at everyone flying about the cabin... I always keep my seat belt fastened even while driving my automobile at 22 feet above sea level......

Aren't you a charmer. Guess you've never been on a long flight and had to go to the toilet ( or 'restroom' for the delicate Americans lol) or had to get up to let someone else do the same. Bad luck at the wrong moment it could happen to you too

I have been through really serious turbulence but I remember the crew ordering everybody to go back to their seat and fasten their belt BEFORE mayhem started. The ladies were quickly to check if everybody was safe before seating as well. It was horrendous, some top baggage doors opened and stuff jump out. Luckily nothing serious happened but I was with back pain for days after that...

This is terrible. I hope everyone recovers but it's hard to see how. I tell you one thing for sure, next time that announcement to fasten seat belts is made, I sure won't be complaining.

I rarely read the Daily Mail articles but go straight to the comments as the reader's comments explain what really happened and filter out the written journalistic histrionics.
