Always but always wear your seatbelt. We were on a Jet flight to Mumbai and the man next to me, an Indian was about 24 stone and didn't do his seatbelt up so I pointed this out to the steward twice, he told me to mind my own business. I told him that he was bout 24 stone and if we hit turbulence he might go up to the ceiling and then come down on top of me which would do me serious harm". He then clipped his seatbelt when the sign went on. Unfortunately, our regular flights with the majority being Indians has shown us that they do not think the rules apply to them, one women was walking to get to the toilet and we were mid taking off so she could hardly walk up the resulting slope! When anyone gets up before they should and are going to above me head I always say to them, "if anything falls on me from that locker I will have you arrested on arrival and I will sue you". It usually makes them see sense. ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT!lastofthebrits
That's why you have a seat belt folks!Obviously the people with injuries that are passengers don't follow simple instructions.Ah well nature selects the winners and terminates the losers!UZZ2014
always, always, always keep your seat belt on at ALL times!!!I have little sympathy to people who get injured if they don't wear their beltsVazilla Bloom
if it was a United flight the captain would have done this on purpose to stop people from snoringJohn
So your telling me the pilot didnt announce turbulence is on its way,if you dont heed instructions and wear your seat belt you only have yourselces to blame..ArrivisteReply toJohn
If turbulence is suspected there will be an announcement for everyone to immediately return to their seats and fasten their seat belts. Cabin crew will ensure that happens promptly. That clearly didn't take place in this instance which suggests the passengers were not warned of the impending risk.ArrivisteReply toJohn
Having read a number of contributions here I'd like to amend my previous comment - it seems there is a phenomenon called 'clear air turbulence' which you can hit without warning. Hopefully an investigation will reveal whether that was the case here or if the turbulence was known and wasn't communicated to the cabin. As others have said, there is a good case for keeping your seatbelt on at all times when seated.DKMOUNTAIN
They tell you to buckle up when turbulence is coming. Naturally some people shrug it off. This is why you don't shrug it off.Jimbo Leedham
All i know is Emirate flights in there safety video they say while seated all ways fasten your seat belt, Even if you put the blanket over you fasten seat belt over the blanket so the stewards will not disturb you. So every time i fly that seat belt goes on and doesn't come off until i reached the gate, These people who got hurt because they think better learned the lesson the hard way. so please people buckle up when in flight.Carlos
I once knew a travel agent who flatly refused to sell Aeroflot tickets on the grounds that the aircraft were un-airworthy and that also they had a bad reputation onboard. I have been flying for a great many years around the Far East and there is always turbulence due to a tropical storm or typhoon and the captain always switches the fasten seat belts sign on well before the aircraft hits the turbulence.Robin of LoxleyReply toCarlos
Although Aeroflot used to habe a bad reputation, they meet the safety requirements of the EU, otherwise they would be banned from EU airspace. Severe turbulence can happen unexpectedly before the Captain can react, and has nothing to do with which airline is involved. I imagine this Captain has more experience of flying in the Far East than you!My two pence worth
Those injured from not wearing seatbelts are going to have a tough time getting any compensation from either the airline or their insurers - during turbulence I'm certain the flight crew advise to remain seated. If you must stretch, do seat exercises, rotate ankles, wrists, raise shoulders etc, keep the blood moving. My two pence worthReply toMy two pence worth
None - I guess it's an act of God - but if the airline doesn't advise where they would usually under these circumstances, I'm no aviation lawyer, but I would think there could be some negligence. If the airlines generally provide advice, then failure to provide the advice result in claims. Similarly, failure to follow such advice is a problem for the injured. Also, if things went flying - e.g., they were not nailed down. You know, usual litigious la-de-daa.Temiti
People who fly a lot always have their seat belts fastened because turbulence is common and the captain always warns of approaching turbulence and seat belyt fastened signs light up. So there should really be nobody out of their seats or unbuckled - but infrequent flyers are naive. They're the ones who wander up and down the aisles and sit un-buckled, ignoring crew advice to stay seated.FACT
On every flight Ive been on, they have always alerted passengers of turbulence beforehand and instruct you to put your seatbelt on..but there again I have never braved AeroflotDisappointed
Well the minute you read aeroflot you know why!! If they wore their seatbelts and the cabin crew locked the trollys in place it would not have been such a mess, however did the locks and seatbelts actually work? I thought aeroflot would have been banned from the skies by now.jane
The last time I flew Aeroflot the Cabin Crew were smoking behind a drawn curtain in front of the flight deck on take off. Rumpled carpets on the floor. Never againamitchell83
I was on a BA flight once to Grand Cayman. The plane dropped 1000's of feet in a matter of seconds. Turned out that we went through an air pocket of turbulence. Just remember seeing everyone including the air hostesses who were all unbuckled stuck to the ceiling until the flight regained control. Was too young to understand how serious it was.Sue kyberdReply toamitchell83
Oh Gooba thanks for the laugh! Mrs Davis lives in La La land me thinks!I have only flown once with B A and found the staff rude, disinterested and the service sloppy. The cabin crewspent most of thier time wining because the plane was delayed and they wouldnt have time to get thier duty free. Mind you compared to Airoflop and the raw chicken they served up on thier old bone shaker they were pretty good.
