I too am a veteran and I too have noticed over the past 8 years a shift in governmental policies, focus, or whatever you want to call it. They use the IRS or other agencies to target anyone who is opening their mouth to speak against their policies or who point out flaws in their thinking, The corruption in government seems to have reached an all time high. I have hopes though when a new administration comes into office things will again be straightened around.

@ Pict. You are correct that often history is written by the winner. This does not however determine what is true or not true. The fact of the matter is that without the U.S. getting involved, China would have lost in the Second World War. If the U.S. didn't get dragged into WWII, the Japanese would have had a free hand in east Asia and China was in no position to fight and win without outside aid.

The goal is not to have China "give up" the created islands, the goal is to maintain free passage. It's economics. China is in a economic downward spiral and this is an attempt to assert their limited military control over shipping lanes. China will not win this, they'll have to create an excuse to justify the maintenance of free passage through the region. There are other non-economic forces which play into the hands of nations against china, mainly North Korea which has since become a nuisance on their border. China needs continued US support against N. Korea, therefore they won't push too hard on this island issue. It's all a show, nothing is concrete.

There's nothing in international law that says a country can not reclaim land they control. Many of the other countries disputing the SCS also reclaiming islands, reefs they control. China of course have always outdone everyone from building the longest wall..longest tunnel..bridge..biggest radio dish...etc. The largest reclaim island is just another item in a long list of big projects China does.

China is doing it within the EEZs of other States. Scarborough Shoal is clearly within the Philippines' EEZ.
