Yea, Imagine... not knowing where you're going to get your next meal from, a leaky or no roof over your head, the town around you falling apart and the infrastructure crumbling away, the rats you might have to share your bed with... Oh the life!!!

They are. Anyone willing to work hard can build the life they want. They have built that life, undesirable as it may be. "Some yearn to live among angels, some to live among swine."

We were told never to stop in such areas if we passed through them. Worst times were if we had to due to a train being due and we had to wait at a crossing.

Poverty does not equal evil. Some of the best, most honest people I know are poor as a church mouse.

Now that is sad, Stuart -- poor and evil are too different things. If you'd been driving through and broke down or needed help, you were probably in one of the best places for help you could be in. It's the big cities that you don't want to get lost in.

Those who gave the advice were well versed in the potential possibilities. You don't ignore such advice, especially as there were regular attacks on tourists travelling by car at the time.

@stuart they are right...you see cash checking stores, pawn shops and liquor stores...lock the doors and keep going. I'm sure there are some nice people in the neighborhood but those aren't the ones you have to worry about.

Picture 3: the boy on the left has hair under his arms. They been getting into Someone's T Gel. Picture 6: those are cypress trees not mangroves.

Looks like a better quality of life than here in the UK, especially if we 'remain'.

Where exactly do you live? One of those abandoned houses in Toxteth?

rooobyReply toroooby
Doesn't make a difference where I live. The places in these photos appear to have community spirit, something that the EU has/will destroy.

This was a sound bite of Florida , truth be told (if I knew the truth) Florida has the buying capacity in USD of all the UK.

Well, it seems they don't send their money on improving the lives of their citizens!

@Standupforit..We the taxpayers in the USA have a lot of mouths to feed and sustaining and not "improving" is the best we can do. You will feel the same way in the near future.

Greatest country in the world...apparently....

USMC_WM_87Reply toJayGee123
It's a big country - this doesn't represent the whole of it. Most people get that.
[ 0 ] [ 0 ]
JayGee123Reply toJayGee123
@USMC_WM_87 - That's strange, I've only ever heard Americans bleat on about it being the greatest country in the world. Maybe they forgot the rest of it... "America is the greatest country in the world...it's a big country though so this doesn't represent the whole of it" Hmm, don't see that catching on really...

Wow, I didn't know this place existed or could exist in Florida. I know N. Miami was a bit on the rough side but this is surprising.

This is most of Florida, but most of the population does not live like this. Other than extreme SE and SW Florida, Jacksonville, the Keys and Orlando, this is pretty much the Florida you will find.

Wow, these photos are soulless. You can capture beauty and humanity with just about any palette to work with. These photos do neither.

The country was built on stolen resources and oil. No that those have run out it cannot avoid terminal decline. Thus empires fall.

I don't know why you people are down voting me. I love America and the small towns like this one. Some of the best people in the world live in our little out of the way towns that tourists never see. I hitch hiked through 48 states seeing the real America and meeting real down to earth Americans. I will never forget one moment of it. It was awesome and our country is the best!
