not so stealthy - I can see it!

There's a fundamental problem with this, going supersonic let alone hypersonic negates all stealth, you're trailing a sonic boom behind the plane and a massive shock cone, there's also a huge amount of heat generated which negates stealth again. There's always been a balance between the two, even when a plane has a reduced RCS it's in no way stealth at hypersonic speeds.

I'll also add a vertical tailplane, with a right angle against the fuselage...

And one day someone somewhere is going to be tempted to use these lethal toys.... hopefully not in my life time but I do worry about those being born today..... or even those born before today. If only all this advanced technology was being put towards civilian purposes and galactic research, but somehow I doubt the story would end there. Shame on us as human beings. We seem to have a rogue gene in us that precursors a self-destruct mode when we cannot control our emotions or political avarice.

In other news, project director and several scientists unexpectedly buy four Pacific islands. Source of funds unknown.

[Pannman - it is air breathing - muuppet]. The similar Lapat or Skylon spacecraft was projected to have a takeoff weight of 250 tonnes, using the air-breathing engine technology to save a great deal of weight. But the Russian equivalent cannot be using air-breathing technology as the fuel is said to be kerosene. The air-breathing cycle needs the low temperatures of hydrogen, to power the heat exchangers, which this Russian equivalent does not have. In which case, the Russian spacecraft would have to weigh more than 500 tonnes, and the muuppet is yourself.

Just an excuse for Lockheed Martin, Boeing, GE and a few other companies to hoover up more taxpayer money.

Good old Russian technology, that tumble drier almost looks like wind tunnel.

Nuclear weapons are so 20th century! Check out kinetic space weapons to see where the future lies. Since they do not leave a radioactive wasteland, atmospheric dust cloud,or incur enormous upkeep costs while creating just as much devastation at their target, they, unfortunately, are where the space arms race is at. I also suspect they are why Iran agreed to quit their nuclear weapon program. Can someone confirm this aircraft can be fitted with them?

If they are letting us see this aircraft it is already out of date.

If they are letting us see this aircraft, it doesn't exist and never will.

nuclear war will never have a winning side, so why even bother advancing the technology?

The powers that be in the World have all bases covered when it comes to nuclear extinction. Land, sea, air and now space

Lockheed Martin at the Skunk Works had enormous trouble getting the SR71 up to Mach 3.2. The Russians are talking about Mach 5. The mind boggles.

BUT, Lockheed did develop the D-21 and other devices that were rated for twice the top speed of the SR-71. We in the US just botched the R&D on them and failed to provide proper funding. Eventually we did do something when the SR-71 was at end of life.

Quite pointess. It would leave - complete is mission ...... and then find it has no country to return to ... just a pile of hot and grey - radioactive ash.

Not sure why you'd need it, given a ballistic missile can reach any target much quicker and with less chance of it being intercepted, plus the fact it seems somewhat overly optimistic to believe there would be a base to return to in a full-scale conflict anyway. But there again military spending is never logical

They couldn't just make this for a passenger plane and benefit all of mankind?

Putin is using the military, similar to the way the US, France, and the UK did and do to test technology.

Hang on you say 'could fly by 2020', then say 'a prototype could take to the air in six years' its 2016 now add six years that's 2022, not 2020. or has my maths failed me again. Or did Doc Brown and Marty take me back to 2014.

Oh! I designed a supersonic plane too. The thing is that mine, just like the Russian one, cannot fly...but it looks very nice on my computer screen, though!
