jail and gov officials are not liable for the death of someone who refused to take prescribed medication, and when a medical facility didn't have room for him. the family of the jailbird is responsible for supervising his treatment and guidance away from doctors

I realize that this guy supposedly has mental illness, but there are plenty of people who commit minor crimes to gain admittance to jail during the winter or in order to get healthcare they normally can't get .

I read online about an elderly lady breaks stuff just to get arrested and avoid winter or homelessness.

I read last year some old guy who needed healthcare slipped a note to a bank teller that he was robbing the bank and wanted a $1. The teller freaked out and he got sent to jail.

we know and so I guess the white system failed him. and Black lives matter and the hell with other lives. Where are the stories regarding other minorities? Or are we to assume these incidents only happen to Blacks? What about Latino's that Blacks always allude to when pleading their racist rants. Give me a break and if you print one story of this BS print all stories. And that includes White, Black, Asian, Indian, Latino's! yes in this order because Latino;s are considered 4th class people because they continue to hang on to the shirt tales of Blacks! Signed Latino looking for real national leader .

No, we are to assume that these things happen to adults in need of mental help. It is a call to find a way to solve this problem. Don't think it can't happen to your kid, no matter what color you are.

I'm guessing that he was denied bail because he was homeless and caught stealing five dollars worth from a convenience store. If he was homeless and needed meds, the judge more than likely thought that he was doing the man a favor by giving him a safe place to sleep, get his meds, and three meals a day. This man probably would have died much sooner living on the street. The judge bought him some time, but there were no hospital room yet to receive the needed help.

sure would like to hear about his rap sheet. a man doesn't get thrown in jail over a candy bar unless there were other serious charges in his recent past ?

He does if he is acting erratically and the judge calls for a mental evaluation placement. The kid was bi-polar and off his meds.

Two things...#1 Don't break the law and you won't die in jail... #2. Was his unwed welfare mother high on Crack when she named her kid Jamycheal ?

Why did they not seek help for him before hand. Another law suite for the not willing to work.

Parents cannot force an adult child to seek treatment or to take his meds. The only way to get help for him is for the justice system to declare him a danger to himself or others. The judge did that but there were no placements available. The system broke down from there.

Petty theft in Virginia carries a harsh sentence including no bail? I read in a legal procedural book that bail is supposed to be based upon the ability to pay but that was information for California. No bail seems extreme for petty theft and to remain in jail for several months how many people has that happened to in Virginia?

Death should have not been the closer for Mitchell's situation no matter what was or wasn't available. He didn't take his meds, he stopped eating according to the article and the department couldn't find a facility anywhere in Virginia? I find that hard to believe.

Why was bail denied over a 5$ theft? Doesn't sound right. Severe mental illness is at best difficult to deal with for everyone- the patient, the family, the police. People may want to blame the family for not taking care of their family member- when its possible they had done everything possible and even after that its possible he may have been a threat to his family and the public. The family may want to blame the police who have 100's of mentally disturbed inmates that advance psych care is just not available. The system for the mentally ill is broken, under funded and out of the public eye until something happens. Activist groups have tied the hands of judges to get court ordered treatment. Many of these patients are on the street self medicating and out of control. This is sad case the cause of the mentally ill needs to come to the light.

My son was jailed for a misdomeaner and suffered an eye injury during his arrest, he too was denied medical attention and eventually lost his eye sight in his right eye. Then cops wonder why everyone hates them.

What did he do to get hit in the eye so hard that he lost it?

He must of had priors otherwise they would not have kept him in jail. In CA they have 3 times and you are out laws, where if you have 2 priors and commit any kind of 3rd crime, they don't let you out of jail. Why is black lives matter saying "go Bernie, go Hillary" when they attacked both Bernie and Hillary???

We are not getting the whole story. You don't get locked up for 5 dollars, or being black. He had to have outstanding warrants. Once again the story will be, since he is black he has been mistreated. SAD!
