How tall is YOUR country? Men from the Netherlands top the table at just under 6ft while women from Guatemala stand at 4'10

Erm... "The ONS said the average man in England was 5ft 9in (175.3cm) tall and weighed 13.16 stone (83.6kg). The average woman in England weighed 11 stone (70.2kg) and was 5ft 3in tall (161.6cm)."

I'm 5ft1 and living in Denmark. My daughter's 10 year old friends are around my height and have bigger feet than Me! By the time they are teenagers they will tower over me. My daughter is petite but perfect!

The US reflects a huge drop in immigration from Northern Europe and a huge increase in immigration from South and Central America. When my daughter was born, the charts for her growth for the first few years had her in the 98th percentile. The truth is she was healthy and of average height for her biological group. The US needs to be viewed as a collection of peoples and not just one group at this stage. We are an EU of sorts. (The pediatrician growth charts are useless for people like us, we mostly ignore them. They need to be customized.)

Uses the word 'grew' in place of 'grown' throughout article ('...have grew by....') - unacceptable.

Traveling around the world I would agree with this analyses, Dutch, Swedish and former Yugoslav republics like Croatia, Serbia.....are the tallest people in the world , defiantly.

Never mind at least we are the fattest. By the way which country wins the prize for the biggest lying politician? We must be somewhere near the top in that one.

I thought Americans are the fattest and famous for producing lying politicians.

The US shamefully takes the title for biggest lying politician. He's in the White House somehow hoping he can help another world-class lier weasel her way in.

The Hague girl
On Dutch television there was (or is?) a program that searches for the biological parents of children adopted by Dutch couples, often in the 1970's, 1980's. These children come from all over the world; Indonesia, Peru, Brazil, Thailand, China etc.Often these searches are successful and the children are reunited with their parents and sometimes also with siblings who stayed behind. In almost all cases the children who were adopted and lived in The Netherlands are at least 1 feet taller than their biological parents and also many inches taller than their siblings who stayed behind. It is the perfect example (or proof if you like) of the importance of good healthcare and a different (or good) diet.

So have they taken the immigrant population into account in this or are they not considering the population movement between both nations and continents? It is a fluid population these days.

I thought it was my imagination that lots of the men in Holland seemed very tall.

In most higher mammals, the males are noticeably larger than the females, the result of generations of females choosing larger stronger mates over smaller weaker ones for reasons to do with protection and the passing on of survival genes. Although not so applicable in today's societies, it still seems to be an instinctive choice in most human females.

War and hunger cause height to slip back by inches in just one generation. I read somewhere that the French took nearly 100 years to recover their height after the Napoleonic Wars and the following decades of starvation. In the North of England towns of the Industrial Revolution the workers were much shorter than those living in the countryside, due to the lack of decent food and clean air over most of the 19th century.

It's true but it's not because of starvation. At that time (Napoleonic Wars), the French people were (surprisingly) the tallest in Europe. But Napoleon want an army that would frighten his ennemies, so he established a minimum size for his soldiers. (and thus began his dwarf reputation, being next to taller soldiers) The infantrymen had to be at least 1.75m (5' 9") and the cavaliers had to be 1.72m (5'8''). Unfortunately the majority of his army (between 450.000 and 600.000 of "young"men) died from the cold in Russia. As a result the average size of French decreased by 9 cm (3.54 inches) at the end of its wars.

Many of these people have grown because they are getting more or better food than they did in 1914.

Tall men (and their genes) less likely to survive a war and the Dutch weren't in the first and we're occupied in the second. Perhaps.

If it is true that they consume more than Germans etc., then maybe they are getting a lot of second-hand growth hormones given to the cows

The other day at the doctor's office, a nurse came in to give me something and I thought 'aw, look how short and cute she is!' Later we both stood up to walk out and she was taller than me! I'm just under 5 ft and apparently have zero self-awareness lol
