You can't even say that it existed within Russian Empireas it was split at that time between 3 imperial provinces (Curland, part of Livland and part of Vitebsk province). I think the headline is misleading - it says 'Country', when the table in the article compares NATIONS. So if we are talking about the nations, it doesn't really matter what country the nation lived in. You are right, there was no such country as Latvia or Estonia in 1914, but the nations did exist. I don't think the 1914 data is accurate though. Most likely they have measured a 1000 people say in Tallinn and the figure was accepted as the average height for Estonian nation.NO Name
6' 4" male here. There are some advantages to being tall. But it's mostly negative. You've gotta watch out for umbrellas in the rain. You're uncomfortable on long car rides. Plane seats in cattle class are unbearable. I'm longer/taller than my bed. With being taller, you also have bigger feet and it can be hard to find a pair of shoes that fit (I get mine online).FloridianReasonReply toNO Name
6'5" here. You forgot to mention: doorways in old buildings banging your head, low branches in car parks banging your head, lift gates on cars banging your head.... Basically getting so accustomed to being hit on the head due to being outside the norm that you have a constant reflex to crouch even when it's not necessary. I'm 5"10 and I often notice how low and short certain things in other countries are. Using the bathroom, turning on the lights, counter tops, legroom in train/plane, walking through doorways, hotel beds... In my country, furniture and everything is bigger to accommodate for height. For example, all mattresses are 2 meters long and it's possible to get longer beds/mattresses (2.20 meters). And there are still people for whom it's not high/long enough.More Quangos please
This study would have been a very good idea when it started, but mass migration has made it a nonsense. Finding the average height of an American or a British person is meaningless, because both societies are multi-cultural (which means mixed with sufficient numbers of immigrants to actually alter the pre-existing culture) so the average height is meaningless. I would love to know the average height of Scots, Welsh and English people, but unfortunately we had to give up our identities, and can no longer be measured as a cohesive unit.Bob Harding

While these are average heights, I can see the changes in my own family - all Native British for all the generations we know about. I am 5ft 6ins., my mother was 5ft 5ins and her mother was 5ft 4ins. The dates of birth vary from 1940s back to 1880s. General living circumstances were similar (no rags to riches story here) but something must have pushed up us females.heartlaker

I was going to post the same thing. My office building is located in a city with a dominant hispanic population and it is so easy to see that the residents are much shorter than most other Americans. The same with the large Cambodian population we have in my state.评论
